1.2 NASTIC MOVEMENT

The movement of the plant in reaction to an external stimulus whose direction is not dictated by the stimulus's direction.

Type of nastic movement:

🌴Photonasty: Disruptions in the intensity of light cause this type of movement.

In reaction to the intensity of light, the flower petals of the type of plants that have this type of movement will open during the day and close at night.

Example: Dandelion flower

(This animation is for illustration purpose only)

🌴Nyctinasty: Movements of plants in the dark or at night

This type of plant can also be classified as photonastic movement Leguminous plants exhibit the nyctinasty movement.

🌴Chemonasty: The plant reaction towards chemicals or nutrients by which the roots grow towards the most nutrient-dense areas of the soil.

🌴Hydronasty: The plant reaction towards the water by which the roots grow towards the source of water

🌴Thermonasty: Temperature variations cause this type of motion by the plant.

For example, the opening or closing of flowers of the plant in regards to the changing of temperature.

Example: Tulip

🌴Geonasty/Gravinasty: Response of plants towards gravity.

For instance, when the plant's strength is insufficient to maintain the plant's upward movement, the leaf bends.

🌴Thigmonasty/Seismonasty: The plant reaction towards the touch

Example of thigmonasty: Dionaea muscipula (Venus flytrap)

the plant responds when insects are coming in contact by bending towards the insect

Example of seismonasty: Mimosa pudica, that is when the leaf is touched, the leaflets fold together.

🌺Difference of nastic movement and tropism🌺

Both nastic movement and tropism involve the movement of plants. However, they can still be differentiated by:

🌱The movement of plants in the nastic movement is faster than the movement of plants in the tropism.

🌱Nastic movements found in certain plants only while tropism can be found in all plants.

🌱Tropism is usually permanent and irreversible while nastic movement is temporary and reversible.

🌱In tropism, the direction depends on the direction of the stimulus while in nastic movement, the direction does not depend on the direction of the stimulus.

1.0 PLANT MOVEMENT

Why does the plant move? 1.  Plant responses to environmental stimuli 2. Plant must respond to a wide range of environmental conditions via developmental and physiological systems 3. Plant growth and physiology are influenced by various environmental factors. How do plants move? 1. Tropism ❤Definition: Growth in response to a stimulus for example light, gravity, and touch. ❤Auxin (also known as IAA) is a plant hormone that plays a significant role in a lot of tropisms. ❤Auxin is a plant hormone generated in the stem tip which stimulates cell elongation and root development by facilitating cell division. 2. Nastic movement ❤Definition: The movement of the plant in reaction to an external stimulus whose direction is not dictated by the stimulus's direction. Example of tropism and nastic movement:

1.1 TROPISM

1. Phototropism ❤Plants tend to grow either toward or away from light. Positive tropism: the shoot that grows towards the light Negative tropism: the root that grows away from the light ❤Cells on the different sides of the shoot grow at different rates. Cells on the opposing side lengthen more rapidly causing the bend of the shoot towards the light. The cells on the shade side develop rapidly than those on the lit side. 2. Gravitropism ❤To maintain an effective photosynthesis and gas exchange of the leaf, shoots develop upward and roots develop downward. Positive: roots that develop downward Negative: shoots that develop upward ❤Gravitropism is important for the roots to anchor the plant and absorb water and mineral ions from the soil and for the shoots to move towards the sunlight to ensure enough sunlight is supplied to the plant. ❤Statoliths are starch-granule-containing plastids that move downwards in reaction to gravity. ❤Statoliths are located in the root cap's specialized ce...
